The Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Netherlands reported Tuesday the arrest of the alleged former head of security for the Islamic State terrorist group, a 37-year-old man suspected of war crimes in Syria.
The name of this person, who according to Dutch authorities had a prominent role within the terrorist group between 2015 and 2018, has not been transcended. A year later he had applied for asylum in the Netherlands and has since been residing in the town of Arkel (west).
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect before switching to the ranks of Islamic State also held an important position in the Al Nusra Front, Al Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, in and around the Yarmuk refugee camp in the south of the Syrian capital Damascus.
He is scheduled to appear before a court in The Hague on Friday, at which time further details of the reasons for his arrest and the charges against him will be released.
