At least 120 people have been injured as a result of an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the open Richter scale that struck the Iranian city of Khoi, located in West Azerbaijan province, on Wednesday.

The director general of the provincial Emergency Management Agency, Abbas Jafari, has informed that all relief services are on high alert and has guaranteed their full readiness to attend to the injured and affected people.

According to the information provided by the emergency services, no fatalities have been reported, although about two hundred houses have been badly damaged, according to Tasnim news agency.

After the strong earthquake, at least five other aftershocks were recorded, the largest of which reached magnitude 4.1. Earlier, another aftershock of magnitude 3.6 was also recorded.

On the other hand, regarding the cold weather conditions that hit the area, Jafari has detailed that the competent authorities will meet to address the situation and will take «the necessary decisions» according to the report made by the Red Crescent.
