German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has expressed her condolences for the death of her Ukrainian counterpart, Denis Monastirski, and has offered to cooperate with the investigations into the causes of the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of the Ukrainian minister and about fifteen other people.

Faeser has mourned the death of Monastirski, with whom he acknowledged having maintained «good and close contact» in recent months, especially since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the end of February 2022, as reported by the German media network RND.

«I am deeply shocked by this terrible news in the midst of Russia’s barbaric war of aggression against Ukraine. I am very sad that my colleague Denis Monastirski and at least 15 other people have died. Ukraine has our full support and solidarity,» Faeser posted on his Twitter profile, where he added a photograph with the late Ukrainian minister.

Monastirski, and other senior ministry officials were among 16 people killed in a helicopter crash in the Ukrainian city of Brovary, located in the Kiev region, officials confirmed Wednesday. The incident has provoked a wave of messages of condolences and support from the main European leaders.

Later, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denis Shmigal, announced the appointment of Igor Klimenko – until now deputy minister of the same portfolio and head of the National Police of Ukraine – as the new Minister of Internal Affairs.
