A Taganski District Court on Wednesday fined the ‘Novaya Gazeta’ newspaper 500,000 rubles (about 6,700 euros) for «discrediting the Russian Armed Forces» in the midst of the invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian judiciary has indicated that a fine has been imposed for «actions aimed at discrediting the use of the Army» by the state, which is a violation of the country’s Code of Administrative Offenses.
On March 28, 2022, just one month after the war in Ukraine began, ‘Novaya Gazeta’ announced the suspension of its work after receiving two alerts from the Federal Service for Telecommunications Supervision (Roskomnadzor) for mentioning «organizations considered foreign agents without indicating their true status.»
However, part of the editorial team launched a new project in Europe. During 2022, the courts declared the printed version of the newspaper illegal, according to information from the Interfax news agency.
The courts also ruled that the newspaper’s website should be closed. The newspaper was founded in 1993. The newspaper’s editor, Dmitry Muratov, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021.
