The Taliban said that several senior officials held meetings with a UN delegation led by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on Wednesday to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
The spokesman of the Afghan Foreign Ministry, Abdulqahar Balji, has detailed that Mohammed has met with the holder of the portfolio, Amir Jan Mutaqi, who has shown his desire to «show the true image of Afghanistan to the international community».
He also said that Mohammed said that the aim of his visit was to «see the situation up close» and to convey to the Taliban the international position on women’s rights. The United Nations, which confirmed that Mohammed was traveling to Kabul today, has not commented on the visit at this time.
Jan Mutaqi confirmed «a number of problems» that the Taliban had to deal with after taking power in August 2021, but stressed that «most of them have been resolved, including the elimination of drug cultivation and the opening of doors to education for ten million students».
In this sense, the minister said that «a large number of women work in the education and health sectors», in the midst of the harsh restrictions on the role of women and girls in public life by the fundamentalist group.
Balji also specified that Jan Mutaqi has demanded that the international community recognize the authorities installed by the Taliban and remove the restrictions on the banking system, arguing that «they have caused many problems for the population».
The UN confirmed Tuesday that Mohammed had undertaken a series of visits and consultations in the Persian Gulf, Asia and Europe to address the situation in Afghanistan, as part of an effort to promote and protect the rights of women and girls, peaceful coexistence and sustainable development.
The agency said that these meetings addressed the need for «a revitalized and realistic political path» and confirmed a «clear consensus» on the rights of women and girls to work and education.
