Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned Thursday that the possible expansion of the Atlantic Alliance to the borders of Russia and Belarus will be met with a consistent response from Moscow.
«We once again express our deep concern over the destructive course of the United States and its satellites toward NATO expansion, bringing the alliance’s military forces and military infrastructure closer to our borders,» he said.
According to the head of Russian diplomacy, this maneuver of expansion of the Atlantic Alliance does nothing but generate «an escalation of tension» both at the political and military levels and, therefore, «cannot remain without a reaction.»
These declarations by Lavrov were made within the framework of a visit to Minsk, where he signed an agreement with his Belarusian counterpart, Sergei Aleinik, for the strengthening of the biological security of both countries, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.
About the document, Lavrov said that its main objective is to «strengthen the security» of both countries and «stop threats» in this area arising from «activities of the military departments of third states and organizations».
