Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday appealed for unity among the member states of the Atlantic Alliance to agree on the supply of German-made ‘Leopard’ tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Speaking to CNN, Poroshenko emphasized that if Ukraine cannot count on these tanks, it is «impossible» to draw up a strong defense operation to face attacks by Russian troops.
«The whole Western world, the whole NATO, must learn unity (…) At the end of the day, we could be in a situation where Poland and other NATO members will supply us with tanks without Germany’s permission,» he stressed.
Finally, Poroshenko thanked the armament aid of most of the Western powers and stressed that Ukraine is not only defending its territory, but that they are «protecting the freedom and democracy of the whole free world».
Poroshenko became President of Ukraine in June 2014 after the Euromaidan nationalist protests, as a result of which the then President, Viktor Yanukovich, had to leave the country after having rejected an agreement with the European Union in favor of another with Russia.
