Syrian authorities have announced the neutralization of twelve suspected terrorists in a clash in Idlib province, located in the northwest of the country and under the control of rebel groups, the main one being Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS).
«Our brave Armed Forces responded heroically to a massive attack launched by terrorist groups in southern Idlib, from the direction of Al Bara and Kansafra,» the Syrian Defense Ministry has said.
Thus, it has pointed out in a statement published on its website that the attackers «took advantage of the fog after an intense firefight with heavy weapons against the positions of the (government) forces in the area.»
«The terrorist attack lasted for hours and resulted in heavy losses among the terrorists in equipment and lives. Twelve terrorists were killed or wounded,» he stressed, before adding that among the dead is «a terrorist leader.»
HTS, a coalition of militias including former fighters of al-Nusra Front, the defunct Syrian affiliate of al-Qaeda, is the main group in the province. Idlib is also home to a number of armed groups supported by Turkey, which has also deployed military forces in the province.
