The U.S. Coast Guard reported Thursday the tracking of a Russian vessel for alleged espionage activities in international waters off the Hawaiian archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.
Although the U.S. Coast Guard has acknowledged that the situation is not unusual, they are closely monitoring the vessel’s activities for possible violations of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone treaties.
The Hawaiian archipelago in the Central Pacific is home to several U.S. Air Force and Navy bases.
According to CNN, this is not the first time that the United States has warned of the presence of a Russian spy ship, since in 2019 it observed such a vessel off the southeastern coast of the country.
At that time, the US authorities determined that the activities of the ‘Viktor Leonov’ off South Carolina and Florida were not safe, as it did not apply the established maritime security protocols.
Thursday’s warnings from the Coast Guard come at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow are at their lowest point in years due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February last year.
