At least eight people were injured Friday in an attack that derailed a passenger train in the Pakistani province of Balochistan, the usual scene of attacks by the Pakistani Taliban and Baloch nationalist groups opposed to infrastructure projects of the federal government or foreign companies, mainly Chinese.
The attack occurred specifically in the Panir area, at the foot of the mountain range that delimits western Pakistan with Afghanistan.
The Jaffer express, bound for Peshawar, was blown off the track by an explosive device and some of the passengers had to be rescued from the six derailed carriages, Pakistan Railways spokesman Mohamad Kashif told the newspaper Dawn.
According to local deputy commissioner Kach Agha Samiullah, the blast was caused by a remote detonated explosive device in what is the latest violent incident in the area.
The previous one occurred on December 25, when a string of attacks left at least six military personnel dead and 17 others injured across the province.
