EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell on Friday backed sending tanks to Ukraine, an element he hopes will help Ukrainian forces regain ground against Russia’s troops.
«Ukraine must be helped to win this war,» the head of European diplomacy has defended in statements to journalists on the occasion of the reception of the New Economy Forum 2022 Award at the Royal Theater in Madrid.
Borrell sees the need to provide Ukraine with weapons that not only serve to «repel» Russian attacks, but also other heavy equipment such as tanks that «has been explicitly requested» by the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski.
«I hope that this is the decision that will be taken,» he added, alluding to the meeting convened in Ramstein (Germany) to discuss the future of Ukraine. On the reluctance of the German government, Borrell said he hopes that this forum will serve «to resolve the concerns of both sides».
In this sense, he clarified that the European countries are not «at war with Russia» and that during these last months «all precautions» have been taken so that the military aid given to Ukraine, including military aid, «does not turn into belligerence».
