The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, on Thursday criticized Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for his recent statements in which he claimed that Washington has formed a Western «coalition» to «solve the Russian question» in a manner similar to Adolf Hitler’s «final solution» to exterminate the Jews.
«The latest comments by (…) Lavrov accusing ‘the West’ of seeking a ‘final solution’ for Russia are completely out of place, disrespectful and trample on the memory of the six million Jews and other victims who were systematically murdered in the Holocaust,» Borrell has expressed.
The head of European diplomacy pointed out that these words «add to previous anti-Semitic comments by Minister Lavrov», while criticizing Moscow’s «manipulation of the truth» «to justify its illegal war of aggression».
For Borrell, the Kremlin has thus reached «another unacceptable and despicable low point,» as can be read in a statement from the EU External Action press team.
«There is no parallel between the crimes of Nazi Germany and international assistance to Ukraine in defending its territory and its people against unjustified aggression,» he remarked, denouncing the invasion and attacks against civilians.
Thus, he stressed the «unequivocal commitment» of the European Union to «ensure that such atrocities never happen again»: «The denial, distortion and trivialization of the Holocaust go against the legislation and values of the European Union», he recalled.
