Former Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarvayev underwent a «successful» heart operation on Friday and is under observation, his spokesman Aidos Ukibay confirmed.
«Nursultan Nazarbayev has undergone heart surgery. The operation was successful and has been concluded. There is no threat to the life of the first president,» he said in a message on his account on the social network Twitter.
He stressed that the 82-year-old former president «is under observation» after the operation, which took place at the National Center for Cardiac Surgery in Astana «under the guidance of a famous heart surgeon».
The former president, who led the country between 1990 and 2019, has responded in recent months to speculation about tensions with the current president, Kasim Khomart Tokayev.
Tokayev took over last year from Nazarbayev as head of the National Security Council, the Peoples’ Assembly and the ruling Nur Otan party — later renamed Amanat –. In addition, the Parliament last week dropped a 2000 law that gave the former president and his family immunity and privileges for having been at the helm of the country.
Previously, the current president had dismissed several of Nazarbayev’s family members and people in his close circle following the wave of protests against fuel prices in January 2022, which resulted in more than 200 deaths.
