Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Friday condemned the European Parliament’s decision to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, asserting that the move is due to the «desperation» of Europeans.
«This move stems from desperation and comes after their failed attempts in the streets to strike a blow against the Iranian people,» Raisi said, referring to the demonstrations that began in September 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini, Mehr news agency reported.
According to Raisi, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is an «official force» and part of the Iranian Armed Forces, so the decision of the European Parliament would contravene international law and the UN Charter.
The statements come two days after the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group for alleged human rights violations during the recent unrest in the country.
The measure was approved on Wednesday by almost the entire European Parliament with 598 votes in favor, 31 abstentions and nine votes against.
Also on Thursday, the European Parliament called on the European Union to toughen its position on Iran and increase sanctions against those responsible for the internal repression against the demonstrations, including the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, and the president, Ebrahim Raisi.
For the parliamentarians, the spiral of violence unleashed by the Iranian regime and its military assistance to Russia in the midst of the war of aggression against Ukraine should harden the EU’s position towards Tehran.
This situation «calls for further adjustments in the EU’s position towards Iran, says the resolution adopted Thursday by the European Parliament in a show of hands.
