The Iranian government said Friday that the Revolutionary Guard «is the largest anti-terrorist institution in the world,» as part of its criticism of the project in the European Parliament to designate the agency as a terrorist organization.
«The Israeli apartheid regime is the largest organized terrorist entity in the world. The British regime is its founder and the U.S. regime its biggest sponsor. The motive behind the anger of the ‘global terrorist club’ is clear: the Revolutionary Guards is the world’s largest anti-terrorism institution,» Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani said via his account on the social networking site Twitter.
The country’s president, Ebrahim Raisi, has spoken out against the measure earlier Friday, calling it a «desperate move» after «failed attempts in the streets to strike a blow against the Iranian people,» referring to the riots that began in the country in mid-September 2022 after the death in custody of the young Kurdish-Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, allegedly for wearing the Islamic veil incorrectly.
«Europe has thought that with this kind of measure it can defeat the Iranian nation,» Raisi said in a speech carried by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, in which he described the Revolutionary Guards as an «official force» and part of the Iranian Armed Forces. «The measure violates international law and the UN Charter,» the president asserted.
The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces on Thursday criticized the bill in the European Parliament and warned that it «creates a precedent in international rules and regulations and will influence regional and global security, calm and peace,» before stressing that «unilateral actions» lack «international credibility.»
Thus, he said that the European Parliament «has fallen under the influence of hostile policies of the terrorist US government and the fake Zionist regime – in reference to Israel – after failing to promote insecurity in Iran» and argued that the Revolutionary Guard «was the one that eliminated the Islamic State, the largest terrorist group in the region».
The European Parliament adopted on Thursday a resolution calling on the European Union (EU) to add the Revolutionary Guard to the list of terrorist groups, while calling for a tougher stance on Iran and increased sanctions against those responsible for the internal repression of anti-government demonstrations.
