Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday called on the countries of the Contact Group for Ukraine meeting at the Ramstein military base in Germany to make decisions on the supply of battle tanks to Ukraine, noting that it is in their power to help Ukraine’s victory over Russia.
In a message via videoconference, Zelenski has addressed the 40-nation coalition led by the United States to urge them to «make decisions» that can have important consequences for the course of the war in Ukraine. «You can start this policy today, it is in your hand,» he stressed.
The Ukrainian leader stressed that steps must be taken to allow the supply of tanks to Kiev, insisting that more than «negotiating on the number of tanks» the important thing right now is to «open the supply» of this armament which, in his opinion, «will stop the Russian evil».
«We have to speed up and the Kremlin must lose,» stressed Zelenski, who apart from the issue of tanks, has called for more long-range artillery and ammunition.
All to conclude that the victory of the Ukrainians on the battlefield «is in the hands» of this coalition of countries supporting Kiev. This Friday’s meeting in Ramstein is key for the international reinforcement of military support to Ukraine and comes in the midst of the debate on how to respond to the military demands of Kiev, which is asking the global community to send tanks to continue the fighting against Russia in the Donbas region.
Germany, manufacturer of the ‘Leopard’ battle tanks has to authorize the shipment to a third country, a matter that has generated internal tensions in the country on the convenience of taking the step and also with European partners such as Poland and the Baltics, which demand decisive actions from Berlin to stop the Russian troops.
For their part, NATO military commanders assured Thursday that Ukraine needs tanks to match Russian forces on the ground and that this is an important resource for Kiev to recover its territory occupied by Russia.
Friday’s meeting is the eighth in a series of meetings of the Ukraine Contact Group, founded in April 2022 at Washington’s initiative, to discuss current and future efforts to support Ukraine in maintaining its sovereignty.
