Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amirabdolahian has recalled that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has prevented Europe from attacks by the Islamic State jihadist organization, reiterating his criticism of the guard’s designation as a terrorist group by the European Parliament.
He made this known during a telephone conversation with Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström, in which he specified that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has helped destroy the Islamic State, as reported by ‘Mehr’.
«Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has played a constructive role in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq, Syria and the West Asian region,» Amirabdolahian has remonstrated, maintaining that by «destroying» the organization it has «saved» European capitals from possible attacks.
In this regard, the head of Iranian diplomacy has harshly criticized the «non-constructive» position of the European Parliament, expressing his hope that relations between Iran and the Union «will continue on a constructive path during the Swedish Presidency of the EU».
The foreign ministers of the two countries exchanged views on issues of bilateral and international interest, highlighting the «historic» relations between the two countries.
For his part, the Swedish Foreign Minister highlighted his country’s efforts during the EU Presidency to expand dialogues between the European Union and Iran.
He also stressed that the recent resolution of the European Parliament regarding the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is not binding.
The conversation comes two days after the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group for alleged human rights violations during the recent unrest in the country.
The measure was approved on Wednesday by almost the entire European Parliament with 598 votes in favor, 31 abstentions and nine votes against.
