French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that he «does not rule out» the possibility of sending Leclerc battle tanks to Ukraine to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the face of the Russian invasion.
«As for the Leclerc, I have asked the Minister of the Armed Forces to work on it. Nothing is reamed and that is indeed collectively appreciated,» Macron said at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The decision, he explained, will be taken on the basis of three criteria. The first, «that it is not an escalation», the second, «that it can provide real and effective support» to Ukraine and the third, that it does not weaken «our own defense capabilities».
Scholz for his part was questioned about the possible shipment of Leopard battle tanks claimed by Kiev. «The way we have acted so far has always been closely coordinated with our friends and allies and we will continue to act according to the concrete situation,» he said.
