At least five people have been killed in the suicide car bombing that kicked off an attack by the jihadist organization Al Shabaab on the regional government headquarters in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, on Sunday.
The attack was followed by a shooting raid on the government headquarters of the Banadir region, of which Mogadishu is part, in the Hamar Weyne neighborhood near the city’s old town.
Sources of the Somali portal Garowe on Line confirmed that the attack was specifically aimed at the mayor of the capital, Yusuf Hussein Jimale Madale, who was not in his office at the time of the assault.
Police spokesman Mohamed Dahir confirmed to DPA that at least five people, including three civilians and two police officers, were killed in the blast.
The assault on the headquarters is still ongoing. «Our security forces are still fighting the terrorists,» said Deputy Mayor Mohaed Yaboh.
