The foreign ministers of the European Union reached an agreement on Monday to allocate an additional 500 million from the common fund to cover arms deliveries to Ukraine, at a time when Kiev is fighting major battles against Russia in the Donbas region and when international debate is focused on the need to supply the Ukrainian army with tanks.
Diplomatic sources confirm to Europa Press the agreement to unblock the seventh tranche of 500 million under the European Peace Facility, the fund with which the EU-27 have financed the shipment of arms to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian aggression 11 months ago.
«A formal decision will be taken this week,» the sources said, after explaining that the meeting of European ministers had served to unblock the new item. Hungary threatened to veto the decision, in a new open front in its rejection of the measures to support Ukraine and to increase pressure on Russia.
This new tranche brings to 3.6 billion the funds made available to the EU to provide lethal material to Kiev in the context of the war, and is part of the more than 11 billion euros that Europe has offered in military support to Ukraine.
