Iran’s Parliament has put on its agenda the possibility of limiting the traffic of European commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz as part of the response measures in case the European Parliament decides to include the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on its list of terrorist organizations.

The deputy chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s committee for internal affairs, Mohamad Hassan Asfari, has warned that Tehran «will not remain silent» and stressed that «the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is on the agenda,» Iran’s Mehr news agency reported.

«If the Europeans are going to treat our Armed Forces and official forces like this (as terrorists), we will put other options on the table, including limiting the traffic of European commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz as an urgent plan in the Parliament,» he explained. Thus, he stressed that «it is better for the Europeans to cancel their decision before it is too late».

The country’s President Ebrahim Raisi on Friday called the European Parliament’s project a «desperate move» after «failed attempts in the streets to strike a blow to the Iranian people,» referring to the riots that began in the country in mid-September 2022 following the death in custody of young Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the Islamic headscarf incorrectly.

The European Parliament last week adopted a resolution calling on the European Union (EU) to add the Revolutionary Guards to the list of terrorist groups, while calling for a tougher stance on Iran and increased sanctions against those responsible for the domestic crackdown on anti-government demonstrations.
