Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the country’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said Monday that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was an «act of last resort» launched in response to U.S. preparations for aggression.
Medvedev thus indicated that Russia’s reaction was justified as the country «realized that the growing threat of a Third World War» and pointed out that the war in Ukraine «was necessary and an extreme measure» in response to «the threat of the United States and its allies», according to information from the TASS news agency.
«Russia had to do something to help people around the world understand the reasons for this special operation,» he said less than a week after warning that a Russian defeat «could provoke the outbreak of a nuclear war.»
However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Medvedev’s statements do not imply changes in Russia’s defense doctrine.
