More than 15,000 Burmese nationals have been forced to move internally due to increased violence in several towns in Katha, Sagaing region, as Burmese junta forces carry out arson attacks on homes in the area.
Resistance members said that attacks and clashes have been reported in a dozen villages in the area between army forces and Burmese resistance militiamen over the past three days, according to reports on the Irrawaddy website.
Thousands of people have fled the town of Katha, while others have sought refuge in the forest. The clashes have intensified during the weekend, especially near the locality of Moetar, where a unit of the Katha People’s Defense Force ambushed a hundred troops of the military junta.
Shortly afterwards, the Burmese Army deployed two fighter jets to carry out bombing raids against resistance forces in the area. Sources close to the rebels reported that at least seven people were killed, most of them women, while 30 others were wounded.
These attacks have also driven thousands of residents of Moetar and surrounding localities to flee their homes. The town of Nant San has also suffered shelling.
