Rebel militias opposed to the Burmese military dictatorship have reported the death of an army commander, Than Htut, whom they accuse of belonging to an interrogation unit and of being responsible for numerous tortures.
That would be in command of the Auxiliary Military Force for Security Affairs and would have died in an action of the militias in which also died a sergeant of this same unit of the Burmese secret services identified as Myint Aung.
Militiamen of the Taungoo District People’s Defense Force assaulted the soldiers on Sunday on the highway linking Rangoon and Mandalay, while they were traveling in a van, according to the Irrawaddy news portal.
«The servicemen defended themselves with guns from inside the van. The two were killed and two others who were traveling with them were also killed,» the armed group explained.
Than Htut was in command of the Pyay Road interrogation center outside Rangoon. «He and Sergeant Myint Aung were investigating and arresting underground resistance members posing as arms smugglers,» the armed group said.
Burma has been plunged into civil war since the coup d’état perpetrated by the military on February 1, 2021. Since then, about 2,750 people have died at the hands of the repression of the military authorities and about 17,400 have been arrested, according to figures from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners of Burma (AAPP).
