The Venezuelan opposition has responded to statements made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, about an alleged offer to «accompany» the dialogue with the government of Nicolás Maduro, clarifying that for now there is no such offer.
«They convey to me the genuine desire for the dialogue to move forward, of the steps they want for it and they have requested that Spain be present and accompany the dialogue,» Albares said in statements to the press in Brussels. According to the head of Spanish diplomacy, the requests have come from both sides.
However, opposition sources consulted by Europa Press have denied the existence of such a request, while waiting to see how the dialogue, which for now remains at a standstill, evolves. A prominent person within the opposition has emphasized that it is up to the actors directly involved to decide «the dynamics of the dialogue».
The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has put on Monday’s agenda a debate on the new situation that is opening up in Venezuela, where the EU aspires to recalibrate its position taking into account the changes at regional and national level, following the dismissal of Juan Guaidó as ‘commissioned’ president and the increased presence of Nicolás Maduro’s regime in the international sphere.
Spain has been one of the international actors that has taken more steps in recent months to resume relations with Caracas and has shown more support for the dialogue in Mexico. As an example, it elevated its representation in Caracas to the rank of ambassador, the same decision taken by Portugal.
«We support dialogue among Venezuelans because we believe that the solution for Venezuela can only come through peaceful, democratic channels and through dialogue among Venezuelans», said Albares in an interview with Europa Press a few weeks ago.
