The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, denounced on Tuesday the death of demonstrators in Peru and warned that the arrests and images of violence at the University of San Marcos, in Peru, are reminiscent of «scenes from the times of dictatorships».
«It is also unacceptable that the universities of America revive the sad scenes of the times of the dictatorships of the Southern Cone as happened recently with the violent entry of the police to the University of San Marcos,» he said.
In the framework of his speech during the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Boric denounced the repression of anti-government demonstrations in Peru for more than a month.
«More than 50 people have lost their lives and this should shock us (…) Faced with these outrages, I reiterate Chile’s willingness to contribute in all multilateral spaces», he said, according to ‘El Mercurio’.
In this context, Boric has conveyed to the Andean authorities the need to «change course in Peru» because «the balance that has left the path of repression». «Violence is unacceptable», even more so for those who claim to be defenders of «democracy and human rights», he added.
BRAZIL AND VENEZUELA On the other hand, Boric warned that what happened at the beginning of the year in Brazil, when a mob of followers of former president Jair Bolsonaro assaulted the headquarters of the three branches of government, should put the whole region on alert.
«Democracy must be respected, especially when the person with whom I disagree wins in free elections», asserted Boric, who has been categorical in defending «the value of democracy» and human rights.
Regarding Venezuela, Boric urged Caracas to return to «multilateral forums». «We express our support to the democratic and peaceful tradition decided by the people of Venezuela to the political and humanitarian crisis that strikes the country,» he said.
Thus, he stressed Chile’s commitment to promote «dialogue between the different Venezuelan sectors» leading to «free, fair and transparent elections with international supervision in 2024».
Finally, Boric has advocated to resume meetings on migration, as he considers that Chile «cannot continue receiving uncontrolled migratory waves». «Our services do not have the capacity to receive and welcome so many people in such a short time», the Chilean head of state acknowledged.
