Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani has «strongly» condemned the EU and UK sanctions, warning that the country reserves the right to reciprocate «such failed policies.»
«The action of the European Union and the British regime is a sign of their mental incapacity to properly understand the realities of Iran, as well as their confusion regarding the authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran,» he explained, as reported by ISNA news agency.
After that, the spokesman of the Iranian diplomacy assured that his country «reserves the right to reciprocate such failed policies and will soon announce the list of new sanctions against violators of human rights and promoters of terrorism in the European Union and the United Kingdom».
Kanani added that the Western authorities «know very well that sanctions will not affect the Iranian nation’s determination to confront foreign interference and conspiracies».
The EU on Monday adopted a new round of sanctions against 18 individuals and 19 entities responsible for human rights violations in Iran over the authorities’ crackdown on pro-democracy protests following the death of young Masha Amini.
With this decision, the foreign ministers of the EU-27 redouble the pressure against Tehran, with a fourth round of measures in response to the spiraling violence of the regime, which has persecuted protesters and sentenced to death and executed several since last September, when the death of the young Kurdish woman in police custody sparked a cascade of protests in the country.
For their part, the British authorities also announced sanctions against Tehran, following the execution of the British-Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari for alleged espionage, a battery of measures affecting the ‘number two’ of the Iranian Prosecutor’s Office, Ahmad Fazelian, among others.
Following this, the United States joined London and Brussels, designating ten individuals and one Iranian entity, in what has been the «ninth round of sanctions targeting actors responsible for the repression of peaceful protesters since protests began across the country in 2022,» as reported by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
