The jihadist group Islamic State in Central Africa (ISCA) has claimed responsibility for the attack executed late Sunday against the town of Makungwe, located in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The attack left 23 civilians dead, including 17 people inside a bar who were shot and hacked to death. Kamale Tsongo of the local civil society said that their bodies were later burned.
In addition, six other people who initially managed to escape the attack were later found in a nearby house and executed, as reported by the Congolese news portal Actualité.
Local media initially blamed the attack on the armed group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which operates mainly in the east of the country and swore allegiance to ISCA. The ADF, a Ugandan group created in the 1990s, has been accused of killing hundreds of civilians in this part of the country. The group underwent a split in 2019 after Musa Baluku — sanctioned by the United Nations and the United States — swore allegiance to the jihadist group, under whose banner it has been operating ever since.
