Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky reported Monday that the country’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has imposed sanctions on 22 Russian clerics for allegedly supporting the war.
«Sanctions have been imposed against 22 Russian citizens who, under the pretext of spirituality, support terror and genocidal policy,» the president explained.
Zelensky has pointed out, in the evening video in which he addresses the Ukrainian nation every day since the war began on February 24, 2022, that this measure is due to the «strengthening» of the «spiritual independence of the country».
The affected persons are 21 representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, and the head of the Spiritual Council of the United Russian Union of Evangelical Christians.
The sanctions involve the blocking of accounts, the suspension of the fulfillment of economic and financial obligations, the halting of cultural exchanges and cooperation, and the deprivation of Ukrainian state awards.
In addition, this designation has been imposed on six people for 30 years, and on the rest for five years, TASS reports.
