Peru’s president, Dina Boluarte, has called on the country’s Congress to speed up the electoral process, assuring that she has no intention of staying in office beyond the holding of new presidential elections.

«Now I call on the Congress to prioritize the elections (…) I will leave when the congressmen vote and we have called general elections», said the Peruvian president in a press conference, as reported by ‘La República’.

Thus, she remarked that «no one» in her Executive intends to stay in power, although she questioned whether the crisis facing the country would not be solved by her resignation. «My resignation would solve the crisis and the violence? Who would assume the Presidency of the Republic?», said Boluarte.

Meanwhile, she has maintained that she is president because of «Castillo’s coup d’état», assuring that she assumed the presidency after the announcement of former President Pedro Castillo of the dissolution of the Congress and the establishment of a Government of exception.

«There is no victim here, Mr. Castillo, there is a country that is bleeding to death as a result of your irresponsibility», Boluarte reiterated.

However, the Peruvian president has put the losses registered since December in damages to the country’s infrastructure and in the loss of production at more than 5,000 million soles (1,188 million euros), as reported by ‘El Correo’.

For this reason, Boluarte has called for a national truce «for the good of the country», reiterating his rejection of violence.

«The government recognizes the right to protest. I have also been part of the protests and have marched for just demands, but I believe that the right to protest cannot be accompanied by violence, destruction and death,» he said.
