Taliban-appointed Interior Minister Sirajudin Haqqani on Wednesday held a meeting with a United Nations delegation led by UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
Haqqani told Griffiths that «there was never any proposal to deprive girls of their education» and pointed to «differences of opinion about the education system that can be resolved,» amid international criticism of fundamentalists for blocking girls’ access to secondary and university education.
He also added that Afghanistan «has been going through wars and difficulties for almost half a century», so he argued that «it is necessary for all Afghans to work hard for the country to sustain itself through education», as reported by the Afghan Ministry of Interior through a series of messages on the social network Twitter.
Haqqani, who is also the leader of the Haqqani Network, stressed that «after several decades, a unified and sovereign state has been established in Afghanistan and security has been strengthened,» adding that «the international community should support these developments.»
The meeting between the interior minister and Griffiths, on which his office has not commented for the moment, came a day after UN Secretary General António Guterres called on the Taliban to end «all discriminatory laws and practices» that prevent access to education for girls in Afghanistan.
It also comes a week after Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Jan Mutaqqi met with another UN delegation led by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed to address the situation in Afghanistan.
