The Minister of Government of Bolivia, Eduardo del Castillo, has affirmed that the declarations of the Peruvian President, Dina Boluarte, about Sucre are a «smokescreen» to «hide» the Human Rights situation in the country as a result of the protests.

«There is no diversion of arms from the plurinational State of Bolivia to the Republic of Peru. That version is totally untrue,» he explained, adding that there is a police presence on the border to prevent coca smuggling, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Deber’.

In this sense, Del Castillo called the situation «regrettable» and pointed out that more than six states of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) have expressed their concern about the violence during the protests in Peru.

«It will be up to them, the Peruvians, to decide how to resolve the conflict, but we cannot remain silent in the face of such a flagrant violation of human rights,» he said. Finally, he rejected the statements of a Peruvian senator who called for a «military invasion» against Bolivia.

On Wednesday, Boluarte denounced that the indigenous group Ponchos Rojos, a group related to former Bolivian president Evo Morales, was involved in the entry of arms and ammunition across the border between the two countries. He asked the Peruvian Attorney General’s Office to investigate the case.

The Peruvian president defended that the weapons introduced by the indigenous group would have been used in the clashes that took place last January 9 in Juliaca and Puno, which resulted in the death of 18 people in the framework of the protests against the government after the dismissal of former president Pedro Castillo.
