Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarcic on Thursday inaugurated the European Union’s new rescue logistics center in Poland, which will serve as a reserve and assistance center for energy emergencies in Ukraine.
This center will enable international partners and the private sector to help channel their donations to Kiev and generate a European strategic energy reserve. The facilities and transportation of supplies to Ukraine are supported by European funds.
In conjunction with the inauguration of the hub, the EU has granted 114 million euros to Poland for the purchase of generators that will serve to increase the strategic reserve, which will allow the donation to Ukraine of 1,000 new generators stored until now in Poland.
This assistance is key to maintaining the power grid in the face of Russian attacks, and the EU is helping to keep public buildings and vital community services such as hospitals and central heating points in operation, as well as supplying private homes.
«By opening up the EU reserve to other donors we can help increase energy donations to Ukraine in its darkest hours. I would like to thank Poland for leading the way, from day one we have worked hand in hand with their authorities and ensured the rapid delivery of vital aid to Ukraine,» the Slovenian commissioner stressed.
