The United States has announced visa restrictions against several Nigerians for «undermining» the democratic process in the African country ahead of presidential elections to be held in February.
«We are committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world,» said U.S. Secretary of State» Antony Blinken, who added that «certain family members of these individuals could also be subject to these restrictions.»
He noted that «these visa restrictions are specific to certain individuals and are not directed at the people or government of Nigeria». «The decision to impose visa restrictions reflects the commitment of the United States to support Nigeria’s aspirations to fight corruption and strengthen democracy and the rule of law,» he concluded.
Peter Obi, candidate of the Labor Party (LP), is one of the main favorites for the elections along with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, of the government’s All Progressives Congress (APC), and Abubakar Atiku, of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
