The European Union has condemned the Russian targeting of the organization that runs the independent news portal Meduza, in which it sees «another serious politically motivated attack on media freedom.»
The Russian authorities have declared the activities of the foreign NGO Meduza Project, owner of the Meduza news portal, to be «undesirable» as part of an escalation of repression that has intensified since the start of the military offensive in Ukraine.
The EU External Action Service considers that, with this new retaliation, Russia demonstrates that «it is not enough for it to disseminate manipulated information on the war in Ukraine», but that it is trying to restrict independent media from publishing its own analysis.
In addition to the Meduza case, the Sakharov Center has also ceased to rent its premises, which in the eyes of the EEAS completes «a black day» for civil society in Russia, «a new low in the Kremlin’s trampling of rights and freedoms».
«Its aggression against Ukraine is accompanied by a continued and growing repression against the Russian population,» lamented the office headed by Josep Borrell, which has urged Moscow to reverse the laws that allow this repression.
