The German government stressed Friday that it is not a party to the ongoing war in Ukraine, after Russian authorities sought clarification following ambiguous statements by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
The controversy dates back to Tuesday, when Baerbock told the Council of Europe, «We are fighting a war against Russia, not against each other,» when speaking about cohesion among allies on issues such as arms shipments.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Thursday called on Germany to «clarify» its position on the conflict, as she believes there are «contradictory» positions.
Following this criticism, a spokeswoman for the German government, has pointed out that «neither NATO nor Germany are belligerent parties in this war of aggression by Russia against Ukraine.» «We support Ukraine, but we are not a party to the war,» she added, even citing considerations in international law.
