UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi warned Friday that the humanitarian needs of the Ukrainian population remain «dire» and called on donors to extend funding to Ukraine.
«I appeal to states, international financial institutions and others to contribute to this task quickly,» he said after wrapping up a six-day visit to the country, adding that it is up to the international community to support Ukraine, whose spirit, despite the war, remains «intact.»
In this regard, UNHCR, together with the Ukrainian Ministry of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, have created a digital platform to unite both supply and demand for housing assistance in the face of the level of destruction due to Russian missiles and shelling.
The NGO has also contributed to the network of services offered by the Ukrainian government to the most vulnerable people, especially public shelters, equipped with generators and heaters, as well as Internet, for work or study.
«Civilian infrastructure, such as power plants, water supply, kindergartens and apartment buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Civilians, including children and the elderly, have been killed or have fled their homes, and these senseless attacks have uprooted their entire lives,» recalled Grandi, who has visited places such as Dnipro, on his third visit to the country.
The humanitarian response of UNHCR, which has reached more than 4.3 million Ukrainians, includes the delivery of emergency kits, the repair of houses and homes, as well as legal and psychological counseling, among others.
