The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has expressed his interest in improving the judicial system, as well as the defense of Human Rights, after the meeting he held this Friday with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.
The Venezuelan leader affirmed that he had a «fruitful meeting» with the UN High Commissioner and ratified his commitment to improve the justice system as well as to advance in the defense of Human Rights in the country.
«We ratify our commitment to the defense of Human Rights and the will to advance in the improvement of the Justice system», Maduro shared through a message on Twitter.
The meeting took place this Friday at the Miraflores Palace, the seat of government. Prior to the meeting, the UN representative met with Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who denounced «the impact of the criminal blockade» of the West on the defense of human rights.
In addition, Turk held a meeting with the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, as well as with the Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz.
This is the first visit of the High Commissioner to Venezuela after the replacement in office of Michelle Bachelet, who installed in 2019 a commission to investigate Human Rights violations and coordinated several reports to point out the shortcomings of the Latin American country in this matter.
