The Taliban Ministry of Higher Education has ordered the country’s universities, both public and private, to ban female students from taking this year’s entrance exam, according to a statement carried by Tolo News on Saturday.
In the statement, the Taliban announced legal measures under the Islamic penal code against any institution that refuses to take this decision in view of the tests to be held at the end of next month.
This new order amplifies the Taliban authorities’ initial restriction, announced in December, by which it strictly prohibited women’s access to higher education until further notice, in a decision that earned the fundamentalist movement a wave of international criticism.
The Taliban, despite multiple meetings with international delegates, including from the United Nations, and statements to the contrary from institutions such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have demanded respect for their decision, which is in line with traditional principles of Islamic law.
