The counselors of Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE) Lorenzo Cordova and Ciro Murayama have warned that the electoral reform promoted by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, called Plan B, could threaten the free vote and provoke a violent situation.
For Córdova and Murayama this reform has «poisoned ingredients» to seek the «annulment» of the 2024 elections, as well as to derive in pre- and post-electoral conflicts that could even manifest in violence.
«If the reforms were to avoid conflict, this anti-democratic reform propitiates conflict», warned Murayama, who considers plan B «a decision of a majority that did not give a damn about the opinion of the opposition and that imposed itself; a majority we could say, tyrannical».
If the proposal is finally applied, «we could have a democratic regression» «which is absolutely undesirable» and «what democracy supposes as a negation could be installed in the country, which is violence», in Córdova’s words.
This reform «opens the door to the fact that by not having certainty that the elections can be carried out, that they can be massively annulled, causing nullities». «This will generate a context of social and political instability that could lead to violence,» he added.
On the other hand, the Government and its party defend the need for this reform which aims to avoid «excesses and abuses» of the INE, in the words of the national president of the Morena party, Mario Delgado Carrillo.
«From the first of February, when the legislative period starts, our deputies will promote the electoral reform, whose only objective is to strengthen our democratic life», he emphasized.
For Delgado, the 2024 elections are key because it will be defined if «the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador is an isolated chapter in history or if we effectively achieve a turning point, a historic change».
