The Peruvian Interior Ministry has announced the opening of an investigation by its own agency and another by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to clarify the circumstances of the death of protester Víctor Raúl Santisteban de Yacsavilca, who died on Saturday during violent riots between demonstrators and police officers.

In addition, several demonstrators have been injured, some of them in critical condition, and some twenty police officers have been injured, according to the Peruvian press.

The Ministry has expressed its «condolences and solidarity to the relatives» of the victim. The Peruvian Social Security explained that Santisteban was treated at the Grau hospital for a contused cut wound behind the ear as a result of a blow.

Some 60 demonstrators have been killed since protests broke out against Peruvian President Dilma Boluarte, whom demonstrators are demanding her resignation and the dissolution of the current Congress.
