The Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office confirmed on Sunday the death of one of the demonstrators during the protests that took place this day on Abacanay Avenue, in downtown Lima, Peru.

The protests have taken place mostly in the avenues Nicolás de Piérola, Abancay and Carabaya street, in downtown Lima, and there have been several clashes between the Police and the protesters, resulting in the death of a citizen. The death has been confirmed by the Grau Emergency Hospital.

A contingent of demonstrators concentrated this evening on Abcanay Avenue, near the university area, a road along which they intended to advance towards the Congress building, but their way was blocked by police officers, which led to several clashes, according to the Peruvian agency Andina.

The authorities have used tear gas bombs to disperse the protesters while some of them have defended themselves by throwing stones and pyrotechnics.

According to the Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office, they are currently monitoring the Guillermo Almenara Hospital, where another seriously injured person remains, as well as other hospitals in the city of Lima that have received several injured police officers.

According to the Peruvian newspaper ‘La República’, during the protests in the center of Lima there have also been several aggressions against journalists.

«We strongly condemn the attacks on journalists during the coverage of the protests. We urge the Inspectorate of the Peruvian Police to conduct a thorough investigation, determine responsibilities and sanctions,» the Ombudsman’s Office has shared in this regard.

In addition, a group of people have been detained and taken to the Cotabambas police station for allegedly participating in the riots and attacks on the police.

These protests take place in the context of social discontent with the presidency of Dina Boluarte, for which they demand her immediate resignation, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent calling of presidential elections. Since then, more than 60 people have lost their lives in the riots between demonstrators and security forces.

Yesterday, a vote took place in the Congress to approve or not the above-mentioned advance of the elections, but the constitutional reform was blocked by 45 votes in favor, 65 votes against and 2 abstentions.
