Belgian authorities on Tuesday ruled out a terrorist or extremist motive behind Monday’s knife attack on three people at the Schuman metro and train station in Brussels and called for a psychiatric evaluation of the detainee.
The suspect in the stabbing is a 30-year-old man, the Belgian Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement, in which he said that the cause of the attack is unknown but ruled out the terrorist motive.
«At this stage of the investigation nothing to indicate that there is a terrorist or extremist motivation. The suspect is not known to the security services,» explained the Prosecutor’s Office. The detainee was interrogated and will be brought to court on Tuesday on charges of homicide.
The attack took place at around 6 p.m. at the Schuman metro and train station, located in the vicinity of the headquarters of the main EU institutions. The attacker injured three people, one seriously, before security officers intervened and restrained him. All the victims have been released in the last few hours.
