The European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has condemned Tuesday the attacks against the Bulgarian minority in North Macedonia and called for good neighborliness between Skopje and Sofia, when Russia seeks to exploit any division in Europe to destabilize the continent.
«Recently, we have seen an escalation of tensions between North Macedonia and Bulgaria with deplorable incidents and provocations. We condemn the attack in Ohrid, just as the authorities did in Skopje,» he said in remarks from Brussels before meeting with Macedonian Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani.
Borrell urged to work for good neighborly relations between Macedonia and Bulgaria, at a time, with the war in Ukraine, when Europe is «under threat from an aggressor seeking to destabilize the continent» and «redefine its security architecture».
In any case, the head of European diplomacy said he felt «reassured» that the Macedonian authorities have committed themselves to bringing those responsible to justice and regretted the nationalist rhetoric of politicians in the region.
«We condemn any incitement to violence. Working to promote an atmosphere of dialogue and mutual respect is crucial because this is the European way. This is the foundation on which the EU is built,» he said.
