Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has raised the possibility of sending military aircraft to Ukraine, as demanded by Kiev, despite the reluctance publicly expressed by leaders such as U.S. Joe Biden and German Olaf Scholz.
«Red lines have to be crossed,» said Nauseda, in a television interview in which he recalled that it would not be the first time that governments such as Germany’s have ended up authorizing something to which they were initially reluctant.
After the outbreak of the war, the Lithuanian leader pointed out, «Germany said categorically that it would only send vests, cases and things like that, but under no circumstances weapons». Last week, Berlin gave the go-ahead to send Leopard tanks.
He believes that it is time «not to talk only about tanks», since at the time even raising the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union «was also a taboo».
«In this crucial phase of the war, where a turning point is imminent, it is important to act without delay,» demanded Nauseda, who supported the requests for more weapons put forward by Kiev, insofar as she considers military assistance to Ukraine to be «indispensable.»
