Russia on Tuesday announced its readiness to organize in Moscow a new round of talks between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoian and Ceyhun Bayramov, on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
«The Russian side confirmed its readiness to organize another round of negotiations between the foreign ministers of the two countries on the issue of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty in Moscow,» the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the Interfax news agency.
In fact, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone call with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian on Tuesday to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh and the activity of the Russian peacekeeping mission in the region.
In this regard, the Armenian Prime Minister called on Moscow to take «necessary measures» to end the blockade of the Lachin corridor, which connects Armenia with Nagorno-Karabakh, the disputed area with Armenia that lies on the border of the two countries.
Also, both Putin and Pashinian have addressed issues related to the implementation of the trilateral agreements signed by the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan on November 9, 2020, Armenpress has reported.
Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a ceasefire after the 2020 war and in early October agreed to commit to the UN Charter and the 1991 Alma Ata Declaration, through which both countries recognize each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The two countries have been involved in several clashes in recent years over the control of Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been the focus of conflict since it decided to secede in 1988 from Azerbaijan, then part of the Soviet Union.
