The Russian Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday sought to impose a nine-year prison sentence against journalist Alexander Nevzorov, described as a «foreign agent» in the country for allegedly spreading «false» information about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Nevzorov’s defense, for its part, has called for his exoneration and stressed that he used information from «free sources» to shape the information that he then spread through social networks.
However, the legal proceedings against the journalist are being conducted ‘in absentia’ since he is not in the country, according to information from the Interfax news agency.
The authorities, who have confirmed that the verdict is scheduled to be announced on February 1 at 11:00 (local time), have placed him on a wanted list.
Prosecutors, for their part, have insisted that Nevzorov has repeatedly expressed his «disagreement with Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine» and pointed out that his actions are «politically motivated.»
Russia’s Investigative Committee had previously opened a case against the journalist for posting on his Instagram and YouTube account «false information» about the attack by Russian forces on a maternity hospital in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol.
