Russian security forces have detained a U.S. citizen walking around the area with a calf in Moscow’s Red Square, authorities have confirmed.

Official sources quoted by the Russian news agency TASS have indicated that the woman was detained late on Tuesday when she was «walking with a calf.» «She is a 34-year-old American citizen. The detainee has said that she bought the animal on Avito — a classified ads website –» they have indicated.

The woman, identified by Russian media as Alicia Dey, told the agency that she bought the animal «so that it would not be eaten» and added that «she wanted to show it the capital, which is very beautiful». The woman faces a fine, an administrative detention of up to 15 days and social work.

Dey, who has published photographs on her account on the Russian social network VKontakte with various animals in public spaces, appeared in 2019 in British media after saving a pig from a slaughterhouse, after which she took it by train and for a walk in a park. However, she had to hand it over at the request of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) after criticism against her for keeping the animal in her apartment.
