Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday criticized Iran’s security forces for failing to take «serious measures» to prevent last week’s attack on the Azeri Embassy in Tehran, which resulted in the death of the head of the legation’s security services.
Aliyev has maintained that the preparation of the «terrorist attack» took some time during which the Iranian police and security forces «did not take serious measures», in the context of Baku’s criticism of Tehran for what happened, as reported by the Azeri news agency APA.
On the other hand, Azerbaijani authorities on Wednesday raised to about 40 the number of people for their alleged involvement in acts of «sabotage» and pro-Iranian propaganda on social networks. Thus, they have indicated that among the objectives of these people were to stir up «sectarian discrimination» and «conflict».
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Jalaf Jalafov said on Monday that Baku has no confidence in the security guarantees that Iranian authorities can promise for Azeri diplomatic employees after last week’s attack, which led Azerbaijan to suspend its activities at the legation.
For his part, Aliyev «fiercely» condemned the «terrorist attack» and called on Iranian authorities to have the incident «promptly investigated and the terrorists punished.» Iran condemned the incident and stressed that preliminary investigations pointed to «personal motives».
