Iranian authorities believe that last week’s drone attack on an explosives warehouse in the city of Isfahan (center) was carried out on the orders of a «foreign security service» and with the support of «Kurdish opposition groups».

According to information gathered by the Iranian news portal Nour News, affiliated to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the parts of the device used in the attack entered Iran «with the participation of Kurdish opposition groups» based in the semi-autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Thus, the Iranian authorities believe that these unspecified groups introduced the materials through «inaccessible routes» in the northwest of the country, after which the drones were assembled for a «sabotage» in Isfahan. Nour News has specified that a cell composed of «Kurdish opposition elements» that maintained contacts with Israel’s intelligence services was arrested in August 2022 by agents of the Iranian Intelligence Ministry.

The Iranian government blamed the explosions in Isfahan on a drone attack. U.S. sources quoted by ‘The Wall Street Journal’ later indicated that Israel was behind the incident, while the U.S. disassociated itself from the incident. Israeli authorities have not commented on the incident.

Iran has carried out several bombing and artillery attacks against Kurdish groups’ positions in Iraqi Kurdistan in recent months and has promised to act until it «eliminates» the threat they pose, amid criticism from Iraq for violations of its sovereignty in these operations. He also accuses Kurdish-Iranian opposition groups, which he blames for fueling the protests that have been going on since September over the death in custody of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the traditional Islamic veil incorrectly.
